Today’s Top 5

About face

The best visage in the group belongs to the dark-haired young girl with the serene gaze situated on the right-hand side of the photo, beside the lady (teacher?) wearing a dark skirt and with her wrist bent back on her hip. The second best face is the lighter-haired girl between her and the teacher, with the Prince Valiant haircut and her hands protectively on the shoulders of the small boy in front of her. The older girl's mien is as poised as the younger girl's is fierce. It's a fabulous photo, one I have been coming back to study in depth all day long.

Gamut of Emotions

I don't remember another group photo on Shorpy with such a wide range of emotions reflected on so many faces. Apathy, silliness, happy, sad, proud, serious, boredom, flirty (girl in the plaid dress). There appear to be three boys in the midst of all these females. I'd love to know the purpose of the gathering, but alas - it's lost to history.

I'm getting nothing for Christmas

How strange that only one child was given a doll. A girl to the left of her is clutching something in her hand.

The boy(?) with the star shirt under his outfit seems to have one foot sticking out of his shoes. Or maybe that's just a really odd shine. How interesting that he's wearing a ring & clutching something in his hand. The girl behind him appears to have very worn out shoes, too.

I wonder if this is an orphanage. The ratio of girls to boys is quite high.
