Evelyn Casey, 129 Gaynore Street. Age fourteen years, six months - Irish. Went to work on 14th birthday cleaning harnesses in Borden Mills. Left because of no work and expects to learn weaving in Flint mill with a girl friend. Location: Fall River, Massachusetts. June 17, 1916. View full size. Photograph by Lewis Wickes Hine.
This is Joe Manning, of the Lewis Hine Project. Thanks to a reporter for the Fall River Herald News, who took an interest in my search, Evelyn's photo was placed in the newspaper and resulted in one of her children contacting me. Evelyn did, indeed, become a weaver, but only until she married. Later, she worked in other mills. Hers is an interesting story, which you can see, along with some family photos, at

Say, these people look just like us, but from long ago.
She looks a lot like Tatum O'Neal.
Don't know if it is the same girl, but there was an actress of this name who did a show in New York in 1924. She played the maid, a typical Irish role. Who knows?
What a direct, alluring look! I'll bet those eyes were blue and the hair was auburn.
Oh what a beautiful girl. Her innocence against the soiled clothes. A fine picture. - rmb
