Well, I know it's bad form to reply to your own posts, but just call me devil-may-care.
At any rate, The Films of Paul Morrissey, by Maurice Yacowar, Cambridge University Press, 1993 page 13, states that "An ancestor [of Morrisey's] founded the Drummond Detective Agency, which was a forerunner of the Secret Service in Lincoln's day, and which provided the model for the fictional Bulldog Drummond."
I did not know that. Isn't Google swell? But, alas, I can't seem to find any other documentation of this claim. In my family, we're related to Nathan Hale, Jesse James and the Cherokee Nation. But I can't find any documentation for that, either....
Any Shorpyites out there got the dope on this?
Wow! Is that Bulldog Drummond (he inquired disingenuously)?
I walk by this building every day going to work. Just as beautiful now as it was then. Architects in New York need to look to the past for ideas versus the colorless cinderblocks popping up all over the city.
Why does Drummonds Detective Agency have "Sewer Pipe" etched halfway up?
[Because there's more than one tenant in the building. - Dave]
