1905. "Along the wharves -- Gloucester, Massachusetts." Starring the schooner Azorian. 8x10 inch glass transparency, Detroit Photographic Company. View full size.
Classified a "sloop" by the government, the Azorian was built at Gloucester in 1902 and fished as far south as Provincetown, generally bringing her catch to Wharf T at Boston. She completed her first paying voyage in May 1902, bringing into Boston 2,000 haddock and 500 cod. At 45 feet and 20 gross tons the Azorian was small, but her task was undoubtedly helped when she received a gasoline engine in 1913. She operated continuously in the Massachusetts fishery until July 2, 1916, when she sprang a leak on Massachusetts Bay and quickly sank. The three-man crew set out in her dory and after a hard 24-hour pull landed late the next day at Gloucester.
