October 1941. "Small towns in the Mohawk Valley. Workers' homes in Little Falls, New York." 4x5 inch acetate negative by John Collier for the Farm Security Administration. View full size.
Good work, Floorplan D. One building in the photo is standing and visible: Polish Community Club (as it's called today) is right northwest of that McDonald's. In the photo, it's in the trees to the middle left.
The name "Little Falls" carried a dark connotation for many at this time: a year and a half earlier (04/19/40) the NYC's "Lake Shore Limited" had derailed with considerable loss of life at Gulf Curve, just outside of town.
In Little Falls there is only a short stretch where the railroad tracks run in close parallel with State Route 5. Of that, there is an even shorter stretch where a hill is directly behind the buildings. This is that short stretch today. The railroad tracks are behind you.
