October 1941. "Waterfront of Bay City, Oregon, a fishing town." Medium format acetate negative by Russell Lee for the Farm Security Administration. View full size.
When I was a lad in the 1950s in Tampa Bay these structures were everywhere on the bay and up and down the Gulf Coast. Alas, between developers and hurricanes they never stood a chance. There are still a few left but mainly located away from the coastal population centers.
I see the "apartments" but the beach seems to be missing, or at least minimalist.
This image is dangerously exciting for plank and cross-tie walkers.
Yeah, I know this is like 800 miles further up the coast, but I picture Doc walking out the door to go on a road trip so he can order a beer milkshake.
The Coast Guard Boathouse is still there, restored and turned into a museum. This is actually Garibaldi -- Bay City is a couple miles south.
Everything is still there as seen from the Crabbing Dock.
