September 1941. "Houses in old mining town. Leadville, Colorado." Medium format acetate negative by Marion Post Wolcott for the Farm Security Administration. View full size.
I lived in Leadville when I was in my early 20s. It was a great place to sow wild oats. It is slowly being gentrified, when I visited last year, the local diner/greasy spoon was being converted to a vegan restaurant. Times and tastes change. Still a fun place to visit.
An antenna presumably 100 feet long for short waves is clearly visible. You can see the typically glass insulator connected to the pole on the ridge of the roof. On the other side there is the opposite insulator connected to a pole at the back of the house.
With a name like Leadville, you wonder what was worse for your kids -- eating the paint or drinking the water!
