"Stephen at Spring Hill, 1952." Picking up where we left off with the young man last seen here, before your webmaster moved cross-country and lost track of/completely forgot about this batch of ancient Kodachromes. View full size.
Oh yes!! I have had the joy of sliding down one of those slides in the middle of summer in Kansas. Bread used to come in waxed paper covering instead of plastic. That waxed paper was perfect for making the slide extremely slick in hot weather and we kids would take a couple of bread wrappers with us when going to the park. Slide down a couple of times sitting on that waxed paper really made that thing slick. Sometimes you would shoot off the end of the slide and not hit the ground for two or three feet from the end of the slide. We loved it and I don't know of anyone who ever suffered any severe trauma.
Try one of those on a 90 degree Michigan summer day wearing shorts or a swimsuit. Near 2nd degree burns.
I remember some friends and I trying to ride a skateboard down a slide, it was a one time effort. No one was (seriously) injured.
Did you ever ride down one of these sitting on waxed paper to wax up the slide? The next few rides were super-fast. Lots of fun!
One of the playgrounds I frequented as a child also had one of these all-metal slides. It could get mighty hot sitting there in the sun all day.
