November 1908. "A typical Spinner" at Lancaster Cotton Mills in South Carolina. View full size. Photograph and caption by Lewis Wickes Hine.
This is Joe Manning, of the Lewis Hine Project. Here is my story of Sadie. More than 100 years after this photo was taken, she is no longer anonymous.

This is Joe Manning, of the Lewis Hine Project. I was the person who caused her to be identified. I interviewed one of Sadie's daughters. It's a lovely story. I will be posting the information soon.
Just a note to let you know that this is a photo of my great grandmother Sarah (Sadie) Agnes Lenore Barton Howard. She was identified after the photo was published in the Lancaster News last December. She was 13 when this photo was taken and eventually married my great-grandfather, who also worked in the cotton mill. Thought you might find it interesting!
