April 1917. "Daily inspection of teeth and fingernails. Older pupils make the inspection under the direction of teacher who records results. This has been done every day this year. School #49, Comanche County, Oklahoma (near Lawton)." View full size. Photograph by Lewis Wickes Hine. Alternate version here.
How embarrassing. As if you don't have enough to worry about being a kid in the world, interacting with other kids, but "Hey! Let me see your teeth!!"
Eek.
Notice how the expressions of the kids in the row being expected increment from ennui to terror the closer one is to being inspected.
I had a biology teacher 30 years ago that did the same thing to me. I wonder if this is where he learned it from.
School classrooms have not changed much over the years. You still have a classroom with desks facing in the direction of a blackboard or whiteboard. The addition of television, computers etc does not take away from the basic design. Of course the elimination of the potbellied stove was certainly a good thing.
