"David Leung in sailor suit, 1911." Platinum print by Fred Holland Day. Another look at the work of this somewhat eccentric photographer. View full size.
America's wonderful catch-all ethnicity in a nut shell! I hope his descendants have a chance to view this photo of him.
Wow! Set next to the other portraits and photos of that decade, David Leung just bursts with personality and life. This photo makes the others look taxidermied by comparison. I am now really interested in the rest of Day's work. Give us more! Are they all off-center?
Cute guy, too! He must have broken some hearts in San Francisco.
I did about 10 minutes of research on this. David G. Leung was born in San Francisco in 1893. On his WWI registration card, he indicated that he was living in Manchester, New Hampshire, that he was a student and a restaurant owner, and that his nationality was Mongolian. In the 1920 census, he was listed as living in Boston, and working as a restaurant manager. I could find no other records.
