Their first battle

was against bigotry in their own country. They had to fight for the right to fight for their country, just as had been done during WWI. Black WWI vets came home to a country that treated them as badly as ever. Fortunately, after WWII, they were finally given the same rights to fight as anyone else. I was born a bit less than a decade after WWII ended, but I can barely imagine a segregated military. The efforts of the Tuskegee Airmen helped bring that about.

Fantastic picture. Will confuse people who expect to see the Mustang car, but well worth looking at.
