St. Louis, May 1910. "The boy on the right, nicknamed Turk, said he was going to Texas soon. The investigator found him recently with $1.75 he had just won at craps." The same boys seen here. Photo by Lewis Wickes Hine. View full size.
Having repeatedly viewed this work throughout the first day of its posting, I am surprised by the lack of comments about it. It puzzles me because, after being drawn to view it as often as I have, even I have no comment regarding Turk, his companion, or their surroundings. Perhaps the real subjects here are light, composition, texture, and so on. This appears to be less an example of photography-as-illustration, and more an example of photographic fine art. It's almost as though Mr. Hine captured the previous image of Young Turk "for the record," and created this one to grace a living room wall.
