May 1910. St. Louis, Missouri. "Boy named Gurley. An eight year old newsie. 18th & Washington Streets." View full size. Photograph by Lewis Wickes Hine.
Just a thought--doing a cursory census search, there are a number of people with first name Gurley in 1910 and 1920. Maybe he could be one of those?
Thanks so much for your efforts Joe...it was sure worth a try. Something in this little guy's eyes tells me he made out all right in life.
This is Joe Manning again. I followed up on two leads. Ralph and Frederick Gurley were living in St. Louis in 1910 according to the census, and they were both around the right age. I tracked down Frederick's son and emailed him the photo, but he said the boy is definitely not either his father or his Uncle Ralph. Then I found Ira Gurley living in St. Louis in the 1920 census, and he was the right age. I tracked down his son and emailed him the photo, but he said the boy was not his father. There were quite a few other Gurley families living in Missouri in 1910 and 1920, but no others in St. Louis then, at least, not in the census. I could find no other data that points me in the right direction. Too bad. He's such a cute kid.
Well, this is Joe Manning, of the Lewis Hine Project, and I want you to know I am trying to identify this boy. I have some exciting clues, and will update you when I find out more.
Joe Manning, if we ever needed a story, this is it. What a poster boy face!

He looks very healthy and he must be tough as his lip isn't split. I started selling papers in 1953 at age 9. Was very good for me to learn the work ethic.
