1962. It seems that parking places in Carmel, California were not designed with 1960 Cadillacs in mind. Lethal-looking enough to be giving my brother, mother and father second thoughts about jaywalking. 35mm Perutz slide. View full size.
I'm 29 and just sold my '60 Caddy. They're 20 ft. long (Fleetwood model). Going out to dinner, we'd have to park in the RV parking at Cracker Barrel. True story.
[Those were some good-looking cars. The Fleetwood (excepting the Series 75) was the same length as the other 1960 Cadillacs -- 225 inches, or 18 feet 9 inches. - Dave]

I doubt if many of them are still in use these days but as a young man I used to pick my morning paper from a pile of papers with a brick on top and a wooden milk crate underneath.

I pegged this right away as Carmel - there's no other place quite like it. I spent a lot of time there as a kid, since my grandmother lived in Pacific Grove.
Before I read the caption I thought to myself, "Is this Carmel?" And I've only been there once. It's quite a charmer of a town. Oh, and that's one sweet sled.
In 12 years your brother went from pillar of the establishment to long haired intellectual? Hard to believe it's the same fellow.
I used to drive one of those big land-yachts. It was very easy to find it in a 1980s parking lot - just look down each row for the tailfins.
