March 1944. Two guests at a St. Patrick's Day party at the Washington Labor Canteen sponsored by the United Federal Workers of America. View full size. Medium-format safety negative by Joseph Horne, Office of War Information.
What a sweet picture! I wish there was some way to find out who they are.
One picture, shifted perspectives. In the era when the photo was taken, some viewers were likely bothered by the image of a black man holding a white child's hand, never mind the circumstances. Those same people couldn't have cared at all about what would be the red flag instead to today's viewers: Someone is smoking a cigarette near a child.
Where did you find this photo? I couldn't find it among the photos on the Library of Congress site.

That little charmer should be at a Valentine's Day party. She's stolen my heart!
