1904. "Grocery store in Overton, Nebraska." View full size. Glass plate negative by Solomon D. Butcher. Nebraska State Historical Society collection.
I grew up in Cozad; the founder's son was the famous artist Robert Henri.
Overton isn't too far from Cozad, they are in the same county. I hope there are more Nebraska pictures! I've been waiting for some to show up - and no, Omaha doesn't count.
I traveled through Nebraska 10 years ago, mostly because of "The Homesman," a great novel by Glendon Swarthout about pioneer life there around 1855 and the hardships endured by women. I'm glad I did it is all I can say.
If you want to know more about Nebraska read The Son of the Gambling Man by Sandoz. It is about the founding of Cozad. Willa Cather's books O`Pioneers and My Antonia will give you an insight to early life in Nebraska.
We live in Indiana with family on the west coast so we drive through Nebraska a lot. The last few years we have driven all the across the state on U.S. 30. It is very relaxing and well worth it. We do like the campgrounds.
I like the sign: GROCERIES [period]
Cool pic! This way I'm dreaming about shops from Mark Twain's "Adventures of Tom Sawyer.
