August 1941. "Recreation -- archery. Southeastern Air Training Center, Craig Field, Selma, Alabama." Army Air Cadet Peck, last seen here, gets ready to let one fly. Medium format acetate negative by John Collier for the Farm Security Administration. View full size.
As Doug Floor Plan points out, he wasn't suited for Navel Aviation.
My parents were of that generation. Appendectomy scars from that era were massive and I've always suspected that the high-waisted swimsuits for both men and women may have been influenced by that.
My father was also in the Army Air Forces during WWII. There's a photo of him and his buddies on a beach somewhere in Italy. They're all wearing swimsuits and every one of them has the waist pulled up above their navel.
And like Cadet Peck, they all look like a bunch of kids, ready to fight and die for their country.
