Washington, D.C., 1888. "Two Moons and American Horse, Cheyenne chiefs." Veterans of the Battle of the Little Big Horn. 5x7 inch glass negative, C.M. Bell portrait studio. View full size.
Wikipedia makes no reference to Two Moons receiving a medal. But it does say he was appointed head Chief of the Cheyenne Northern Reservation by the U.S. Army general to whom he surrendered in 1877. American Horse was an eloquent Oglala Lakota chief who promoted friendly association with whites and education for his people, including the notorious Carlisle Indian Industrial School.
The gent is possibly sporting a battle medal or a Purple Heart earned for taking out the arrogant Colonel Custer.
