Washington, D.C., 1901. "Block 290. View of 12th Street N.W., west side, looking north from E Street toward F Street." 5x7 inch glass negative, D.C. Street Survey Collection. View full size.
I love this whole picture but the wee ones standing on the corner are especially fascinating to me. I think Mama is in the store buying provisions to include butter, eggs, cheese and "cantelopes" but big brother and little sister begged to stay outside, watching the man across the street with his miraculous camera. What a lovely summer's day that must have been.
This is the view looking north from E Street today. The block to the left E Street becomes Pennsylvania Avenue, so this is a choice location. Where ice cold watermelon was sold is now a building called The Warner, where management claims historic grandeur meets 21st-Century hospitality. Note a tree still stands where a tree once stood. To the right is a Nordstrom Rack.
