"Girl 1943" is all it says on this Kodachrome snapped by Navy photographer's mate Don Cox on a beach that would seem to be somewhere in the vicinity of San Diego. View full size.
This girl appears to be about the same age as my mother was back then -- 13.
My mom just turned 90 this past year and is still living in the same house my siblings and I grew up in.
Lane field is indeed in San Diego. Over the years it has hosted a myriad of events, including the Shriners in 1943.
She has a poise and presence that belies her tender years, which by my reckoning is in the early to mid teens. Makes her around the age of my father, who was born in 1930. Her dress is modest and classy without sacrificing femininity and allure. Lovely set-on waist and delicate pintucks, the stripes so fresh. I guess I'm old-fashioned; I wore my hair like that in the '70s.
