Norfolk, Virginia, circa 1905. "Weighing cotton on the docks." 8x10 inch dry plate glass negative, Detroit Publishing Company. View full size.
Since Ad Orientem brought up bowler hats, I'll comment on the man wearing a bowler in the center of the photograph. He's not so much wearing his hat as he is balancing it on top of his head. He's dressed so nattily I have to conclude this is the look he intended. Everyone else's hat is worn much further down on their crown, so it was not a standard look.
Many years ago, I did the job of the guys with the clipboards on the Savannah docks. Nobody told me I had to count how many bales of cotton were unloaded from the ships. I wasn't invited back the next day.
The bowler hat and pocket watches.
