August 1957. New York. "Up-to-date wardrobe -- men's fashions." Medium format negative from photos for the Look magazine assignment "Is Your Wardrobe Up-to-Date?" View full size.
Maybe I’m nuts; I'm sure in the minority. When I taught at the University of Pittsburgh in the 1980s suits were standard wear. I always felt spiffy and professorial in a three piece grey flannel suit or a tweed jacket with a sweater vest. Then I moved to Hawaii where it was all aloha shirts, and now I'm in Portland where people wear flannel shirts to funerals. (Admittedly Portland is so laid back that I could wear my old three-piece and no one would look askance, not that it would fit me now). Still, I miss that "grown-up" feeling that comes from a well-fitting suit.
those hats -- and the guy in front if he keeps on smoking.
That guy in front could almost be my dad. He was always impeccably dressed (a bit of a dandy), with a nicely ironed handkerchief in his breast pocket. I learned to iron with those handkerchiefs.
Watch out! The mannekins have escaped and are taking over the city!
As I used to complain about my wool clothes as a kid; that suit in the front looks like it would be a pure misery to wear.
I'd go mad, too, if I had to wear a gray flannel suit and a fedora every day. It must have been a terrible era for nonconformists.
