I love Samuel Gottscho's pictures so much, and my basic impression is that we see mostly photos from the 1940s and 50s, the architectural jobs, but of course there are also the iconic shots from the 30s of Manhattan cityscapes on Shorpy. To see a pre-war photo like this one, of detailed human activity, is more of a rarity, and all the more to be cherished. Gottscho, by the way, was born in 1875, so he was pushing 60 when he took this photo, and he was in 70s and 80s when he shot all those postwar pictures.
