August 1941. "Store on main street of town. Lone Tree, North Dakota." Medium format acetate negative by Marion Post Wolcott for the Farm Security Administration. View full size.
How does she do it? This simple scene would seem to offer few opportunities for a photographer to assert his/her unique style, but there's something about the contrast, the shadows, the I-don't-know-what, that allowed me to see at a glance that this is the work of MPW. Perhaps a photographer will explain it to me.
Sorry, I've already confessed my crush on Ms. Wolcott; there's nothing I can do to stop it.
