July 1941 in Caldwell, Idaho. "Two boys read storybooks in the shade." 35mm negative by Russell Lee for the FSA. View full size. Below: Their kid-size tree.
I would almost swear that those two boys are my uncles, Jim and Don Southwick. Their dad, my grandpa, bought Terry Electric and changed the name to Southwick Electric. He later sold it to T.C. Blacker and it became Blacker's. My grandma Pearl and Grandpa Jim Southwick lived on Blaine before building their house in 1961 on Idaho Street, not far from the high school.
The house in the background is 1272 Blaine street. Corner of Blaine and 13th. A good friend of mine lived there in the mid 70's.
I love it that they're reading. (If I saw this scene today, I'd probably have a wreck from the shock and thrilled surprise!)
