Alameda County, California, 1959. "29th Annual Newark Fireman's Ball." At center, fireman Ed Brazil. 4x5 inch acetate negative. View full size.
All these years of visiting the Shorpy website, I always thought I'd see a comment from someone that knew someone in a picture someone else posted. It may have happened and I just missed it somewhere. Regardless, I didn't think it would be me, but I remember my mom mentioning Ed Brazil. She lived most of her life in Fremont (formerly Irvington and other non-incorporated districts) and Newark. It was a small community back in those days and everyone knew everyone else. I grew up there too, though a few years after this picture was taken, and remember attending a lot of wedding receptions at the Newark Pavilion.
This firefighting apparatus is the early 40's White Super Power.
Now, I'm not a guy who's attracted to guys, but Ed Brazil is one squared-up-lookin' dude!
The best! (Even better than the cornucopia of her shirt.)
