Washington, D.C., circa 1937. "American Security & Trust Company, 15th Street & Pennsylvania Avenue N.W." Points of interest include the streetcar switch tower (examples of which can also be seen here, here and here), and emergency call box with colored globe. Safety negative by Theodor Horydczak. Below is the same view from August of 2019.
This is now a Bank of America. They removed and replaced the raised lettering, but otherwise the building remains the same.
The engraving on the front of the building tells us that American Security & Trust was incorporated in 1890, and the building erected in 1905. This made me think of the article on Roman numerals in our 1969 edition of the World Book Encyclopedia, that featured pictures of marionettes dressed as gladiators, trying to solve equations written with Roman numerals. It didn't end well.
