Columbus, Georgia, circa 1959. Since the days of "Rebel Without a Cause," one staple of Young Adult pop culture has been the drama inherent in that evergreen premise, Which boy will win the flower-arranging contest? The two young men shown here appear to have ribboned on the theme of "Spring Unfolds" -- at right with a creation titled "Rocket to Moon"; on the left with a nautical floral composition featuring a beached cabin cruiser, the "Fair Lady." 4x5 inch acetate negative from the Shorpy News Photo Archive. These kids both did nice work, but I really like Rocket Trip. It’s cleverly evocative of a launch. The mums (in B&W, anyway) remind me of the fluffy vapor cloud; if the spiky plants are red hot poker, they could be the engine flame; the eucalyptus mimics the arc of flight. Nice!
Would take another ten years.
