August 1908. "Noon hour in an Indianapolis tomato cannery. Young fellows in front of boxcar." Photograph by Lewis Wickes Hine. View full size.
Do I see a pair of twins near each end of the second last row?
I count only two cigarettes and no pipes. Certainly unusual.
Love the guy in the bowler hat on the right, with the cigarette dangling. Quite the tough guy. He could get a sidejob as enforcer for a loan shark.
Most of the faces in Hine's pictures have that hard, tough guy look to them.
This crew looks a bit happy and loose by comparison.
Quite a few smiles here.
