They exist in several variations from single piece continuous ones to those split in various ways, all to facilitate tire mounting and retention. Still very common on large trucks, farming, construction and mining equipment.

I know little about pre-1950 cars. Can I assume that a tire change involved taking off the four nuts and clamps that held the rim to the wheel assembly?
