Summer 1938. "Utopia Children's House, Harlem, New York." Photo by Jack Allison for the Resettlement Administration. View full size.
Artist Jacob Lawrence (whose famous "Migration Series" is being shown as a whole for the first time in 20 years right now at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC) received his early art education here from the artist and Harlem Renaissance figure Charles Alston.
The brownstones on the left are typical of the beautiful quality the entrances these buildings had. I had taken a walk in this neighborhood a couple of years back and the view of the blocks with these brownstones is amazing.
By the way, the Utopia Children's House was both a school and community center for children of the neighborhood.
Hey, is that milk up in the window?? Been awhile since I've seen one of these.
