October 1939. Gem County, Idaho. "Former Jackknife saloon and stagecoach tavern, now the temporary home of a member of the Ola self-help sawmill co-op. Until 1914 the stagecoach used to stop here to change horses and for the refreshment of travelers." Photo by Dorothea Lange. View full size.
I live in the county next door (Ada). This area is still pretty.
I love the formal quality of the gate that strives at being an official portal to this domain, with the wispy transparency of the "wall" (fence) around it...
This is a splendid example of why I like to check out shorpy photos...very haunting and yet at the same time I can't help but wonder at the history that is woven into this place. I can picture the stage coach roaring up to the front door, passengers getting off to wet their whistles and dusting off the dirt from their trip, maybe making a trip out back to the outhouse before the next departure...wonderful memories.
