March 1942. Washington, D.C. "Dancing class at an elementary school." Expert instruction in both the boogie and the woogie. Medium format nitrate negative by Marjory Collins for the Office of War Information. View full size.
Great photo!!! Sad to say, but 20+ years later our gym uniforms looked exactly like these - in a lovely, bright green!!! I would love to know if any of these girls went on to dance professionally. They seem very serious in their endeavors!
The sideways girl seems to have had some training in ballet as well as in boogie and woogie. She's quite graceful with her out-turned right foot and pointed toe as well as her uplifted left arm and dropped wrist. I like how they are all dancing interactively. I would LOVE to know what they were listening to... Maybe the Duke?
