1946. Woman (Milah Birnie?) in an experimental plywood lounge chair. View full size. 35mm Kodachrome transparency, Charles and Ray Eames collection.
The plywood probably was comfortable but that could not have been a comfortable position for her feet and legs and it would have taken a child or an athlete to get out of it. I doubt that anyone could have done it gracefully!
Part of the beauty of the Eames's experimenting with plywood is their ability to mold it into complex curves. The plywood is actually very comfy when molded properly. Love her legs too!
The chair design looks really neat, but I think being made out of plywood might be a minus. I can imagine trying to get out of it too! You'd have to scoot onto the floor on your knees and then struggle to stand.
The more I look at the photo almost gives the impression that the room is tilted too!
