Circa 1910. "Bathing at West Palm Beach, Florida." 8x10 inch dry plate glass negative, Detroit Publishing Company. View full size.
There's nothing quite as comfortable as sitting down in the sand in a suit, a bowler, and a pair of freshly shined cordovans.
Knowing how hot it can be on the beach in West Palm I wonder which is worse, sweating under those heavy dresses or wearing the damp, sticky, full length bathing suit? The good old days weren't always good.
[The Florida beaches were winter resorts. People didn't go there when it was hot. - Dave]
But that would mean...gasp...that some of them are wearing white after Labor Day!
Not a beach blanket, sit-upon or sand shield in sight. I just looked at a Venice Beach, California, photo dated 1920 and a few people (still in suits and dresses) were using some kind of cloth under them. But I do wonder when it was that the first person slapped him/herself on the forehead and said, "Next time we come to the beach, let's bring something to sit on, OK?"
