Daytona Beach circa 1905. "The Clarendon Hotel -- Seabreeze, Florida." 8x10 inch dry plate glass negative, Detroit Publishing Company. View full size.
About four years after this photograph was taken, the Clarendon Hotel in Seabreeze (now Daytona Beach) was destroyed by fire. Two years later, it was rebuilt using brick and a whole lot less imagination; that's the iteration of "The Clarendon" seen on many picture postcards from the teens and twenties. Over time, it evolved into the concrete monstrosity that now stands in its stead, retaining the "archway to the beach" concept, but little else in the way of form or character:
This hotel is now the Plaza Resort and Spa...I think I liked it better in the old days.
