October 1939. A street scene in Camden, New Jersey. View full size. 35mm nitrate negative by Arthur Rothstein for the Farm Security Administration.
The Savar Theater was far ahead of its time. Modern sound, bold facade. Pity's it's long gone.
My Mom smoked Domino, unfiltered for years. When they quit making them, she went to Pall Mall, but never stopped complaining. This was the early '60s. Then I got her to try "cork tip," as she called filters...
Hires was the first brand of bottled root beer - it was first made in 1866. When I was a kid we made our own root beer using Hires Root Beer Extract. Hires is now marketed by the same company that makes 7 Up and Dr Pepper.
From the scary comments about Camden, should we be afraid of the soup made there?
Hires Root Beer and Domino Cigarettes. Those are new to me.
Poor Camden was rated "America's Most Dangerous City" in 2005. I'll take the cigarettes & abundant tobacco advertising circa 1939 over the present day. But the old burg looks pretty down at the heel even then. Walt Whitman is buried there, can't be all bad.
I guess this proves advertisements have always been a eyesore, we must just complain about it more nowadays.
Pile on the irony... The man with the cigarette inches from the baby's face, while in the background are Philip Morris cigarette ads advocating "SAFETY FIRST" - as if their cigarette's are safer. The same way that playing Russian Roulette with a .38 is safer than with a .45..... :)
