Oakland circa 1958. "Collision with truck." Oldsmobile meets Hunt's Tomato Sauce. 4x5 acetate negative from the News Archive. View full size.
The Nimitz Freeway opened through downtown Oakland in November 1958. The camera must be looking southeast from around Market St, the NW end of the under-construction piece of the freeway; the buildings left of the Tribune tower are still there on the east side of Broadway at 13th-14th St.
1954 Olds 88 and a 50-52 Pontiac on the street.
Given the location of the Tribune tower hiding behind that power pole, my guess is we are on the Nimitz Freeway, possibly near the Cypress Street Viaduct. I drove past/around/through it regularly while it was being built and then watched footage of its collapse in 1989.
Since this series started it seems like a lot of the participants have been Oldsmobiles.
Oh wait, never mind, it's Tomato Sauce.
If so this is Route 226 prior to it becoming Route 24, prior to it becoming I-980. Heading south just north of 27th.
