November 1940. "Main street intersection in Norwich, Connecticut, on a rainy day." 35mm nitrate negative by Jack Delano. View full size.
I think this is one of the very best pictures I've seen on Shorpy. I have no Idea why but I can almost feel that first rain in the fall.
What a wonderfully evocative photo. This is Norwich in 1940; my place and time were Cambridge in the early 1970s. It beautifully conveys the atmosphere of a rainy late fall New England day.
First thought - "She shouldn't be texting while she crosses the street."
Second thought - Apparently I need coffee.

This postcard view appears to be the same block (with the Boston Store) at a reverse angle around 1910.
This photo is reminiscent of the recent movie "The Age of Adaline." Shorpy viewers may enjoy the film with its vintage photo clips.
Looking at this photo of a rainy day sure puts me in the mood to watch some film noir that became popular after the war.
I sure DO like the '40 wagon, but that '39 Chevy coupe about three cars behind, hiding on the other side of the pole is mighty tasty too.
Wow, who would not want that brand new '40 Ford woody - with aftermarket grille guard and fog light. Nice looking '38 Ford stake bed truck beside it as well.
