July 5, 1938. Oakland, Calif. "Daniels-Wells Pontiac, 3055 Broadway." For under $200, a number of bargains (and customers) to be had. View full size.
Used car lots are still found along that section of Broadway which is commonly called Auto Row. I live a couple miles away and usually have my car smog checked right across the street from the photo location.
The present day next door neighbour is the Bay City GM Auto Mall, on Oakland's Auto Row.
I believe I spy a 1935 Packard just below the office sign.
Just above the ED in USED, far left, can be seen the top of what is today the Summit Alta Bates Medical Center. Also of note, behind that '33 Willys at far left, is a 1932 Ford five-window coupe for $175.
They both have excellent brakes in their trouser legs, something that is a little more rare today.
[I think it's the cars that have the brakes. -Dave]
I'll take every car on the lot!
A Delorean when you really need one. And I'd scoop up that Willys in a New York minute as well!
Give me a time machine and a couple of thousand dollars and I'll be a happy camper.
Please write up the entire inventory of the car lot and have them delivered to my house tomorrow morning. And cash- I'll pay in cash.
I'll take that '33 Willys on the left, please.
Customer: "Are these used cars guaranteed?"
Salesman: "Well, they're guaranteed to be used!"
At least they were practicing truth in advertising.
From the 1938 Oakland phone book.
