Circa 1906. "Old town hall -- Marblehead, Massachusetts." 8x10 inch dry plate glass negative, Detroit Publishing Company. View full size.
The Jersey Milk Company horse appears to have been impounded by the Marblehead cops. They're tough on illegal parkers.
I note the "Jersey Milk and Cream" legend on the milk cart in the center. Jerseys produce the highest percentage of butterfat of any dairy breed in their milk, and so there would be more cream to sell if run through a separator. High-fat milk or cream also keeps better in the absence of refrigeration, as here.
Movie studio back lots are relatively small, so by necessity the streets on them are usually less than three or four blocks long, even when they're supposed to represent those in large cities; you never see one receding far into the distance, but instead ending in a T or curve. That's the main reason this looks rather like a set.
For some reason, this photo looks like it was taken on a movie set. Great shot. What is more remarkable though, is that so many of these beautiful buildings are still around 106 years later!
Marblehead, Ma. located on the coast has always been a seafaring town. A little fact: the soldiers who rowed General George Washington across the Delaware were all from Marblehead. General Washington was in good hands.
This car looks like a 1906 Cadillac Model M "Tulip Tourer". It had a 98.2 cubic inch one-cylinder engine and was chain driven.
