Washington, D.C., circa 1906. "The Fords, Rock Creek, zoo park." 8x10 inch dry plate glass negative, Detroit Publishing Company. View full size.
At least one is for sure, although bypassed by a bridge and closed to traffic. It's on Beach Drive north of Military Road. At one time you could use it if the creek was low enough. Another was on the stretch Beach Drive bypassed by the zoo tunnel. It's remains were visible several years ago.
I've pined for the Rock Creek fords every since the Park Service closed them. Growing up in D.C., I loved driving through them for many years.
I can remember, back in the late fifties, when a friend's car decided to die in the middle of one of the fords. I think they're closed to traffic now, alas.
But it looks like deciduous country.
Renault I think. At the time they were the shinizle.
I remember Dad going out of the way every once in a while to go over the fords in Rock Creek Park on the weekly Sunday drive to my grandmother's house in the 1970s.
"The Fords." Nice pun, Detroit Publishing Co.
[You might think, but the car isn't a Ford. The name refers to the paved creek fords near the National Zoo. - Dave]
